Director and artist Mari Kivi was born on 17 October 1984. In 2010 she graduated from Pallas University of Applied Sciences in Tartu with a degree in painting and in 2018 she graduated from the Department of Animation at the Estonian Academy of Arts (BA, cum laude). Her diploma films ‘Food Chain’ and ‘Contact’ were screened at several international festivals (Annecy, KABOOM, Mecal Pro, Stuttgart, IndieLisboa, Primanima, Etiuda&Anima, London International Animation Festival, AJAYU, Animateka, Palm Springs, Fredrikstad, PÖFF Shorts and many others). In 2019, ‘Food Chain’ was shortlisted in the top 10 in the BAFTA student film category.
From 2017 to 2021, Mari worked in the Department of Animation of the Estonian Academy of Arts. From 2019 to 2021, she was a member of the board of the Estonain Animation Association, organizing the Estonian Animation Year ‘Tuganov-Raamat-Pars’. In 2021, she founded the international animation festival Animist Tallinn. In addition to filmmaking, Mari has participated in several exhibitions and illustrated posters, albums and books. She currently works as an animator and artist at the publishing house Avita.
